18th C German Salt Cellars - early pair

18th C - circa 1725 - German salt cellars. Molded bowls with cut and painted glass portraits inlaid on the underside. Portraits of a man and a woman were traditionally presented as marriage gifts. Historically a highly valued trade commodity, salt, presented in decorative vessels, was as a prestigious addition to a table setting.
