18th C Italian Secrétaire with exotic 19th C decoration


18th C - circa 1725 - Italian simple single drawer slant front case secrétaire covered with 19th C. - circa 1825-1840 - elaborate exotic painted lacquer decoration

Legs and writing surface very stable and usable.

Exterior: The top, front and sides of this secrétaire present a world of imaginative and playful renderings. Raised relief Chinoiserie ornamentation depicts exotic, imagined scenes of pagodas, birds, a rhinoceros, rabbits, a rooster, a tiger, a lion, a snake, monkeys, a deer, dogs, a turtle, and insects.

Exceptional decorative presence.

Interior: Painted and decorated with a repeating floral pattern with a small fitted shelf on top.

Very credible paint and decoration with little over paint and no enhancement.

Some touch-up to the losses of green paint and gesso. Wear to the top surface.
